Device file:

Quote:
Try to create a folder named

CON PRN AUX COM0 COM1 COM2 COM3 COM4 COM5 COM6 COM7 COM8 COM9 LPT1 LPT2 PRN NUL

And tell me can you or not.

Normally, you cant create a folder or file name with this word. Because, this are, Device Files.
MS-DOS borrowed the concept of special files from Unix, but renamed them device files. Because early versions of MS-DOS did not support a directory hierarchy, device files were distinguished from regular files by making their names reserved words. This means that certain file names are reserved for device files, and cannot be used to name new files or directories. The reserved names themselves are chosen to be compatible with "special files" handling of PIP command in CP/M.

Reserved words cannot even be used with extensions, so that file names like "nul.doc" and "con.htm" are invalid. This has been known to confuse some users or to cause programmatic construction of file names to fail.

There is a patch released under Win 9x that plugged asecurity hole that allowed a malicious user to gain control of a remote machine because of the way Win9x parsed path names.

Also you can make folder with Device File name, using some tricks.

Windows Vista Hidden Boot Screen:

Quote:

The default boot screen of Windows Vista is a black screen containing just a progress bar and the text Microsoft Corporation. Those who are tired of this boring default look of the Windows Vista Boot Screen., can enable the hidden Aurora Boot Screen.

Start>Run>type msconfig>click OK
Now from the System Configuration tool click on the tab Boot
Under Boot Options check "No GUI boot"
Click Apply and then OK and restart your computer to see the new boot screen.

How to connect two computers and access their drives through the Internet

Quote:

You can connect two computers over the Internet and use a given computer's drives just like you'd use local drives -- run programs, copy, get a list of files, etc. Here's how:

* Make sure that both computers (computer A and B) have "TCP/IP" and "NetBEUI" protocols installed and properly functioning.

* Make sure that the "Remote Access Serives" are setup and properly functioning.

* Find out the IP address of computer A.
You can do this by going to the network icon in the "Control Panel"

For example, let's assume that "205.159.67.4" is the IP address of computer A.

* Enable file sharing and share a path of your choice on computer A.

For example, share "C:" as "INTERNET_DRIVE"

* Log both computers on to the Internet (dial and connect to your internet service provider for example). If you're on an Intranet, you don't have to connect to the Internet.

* Go to computer B's "DOS/Command Prompt" and type:

NET USE X: \205.159.67.4INTERNET_DRIVE

If you get an user name/password or logon error, use the following command instead (after replacing uname with the actual user name and pword with the matching password):

NET USE X: \205.159.67.4INTERNET_DRIVE /USER:uname pword

This will map computer B's drive X to computer A's shared path INTERNET_DRIVE, which is computer A's C: drive.

Now you can use drive X over the Internet just like any other drive on your local computer.
