if i want to say what OS is my fav. i cant just say one name ( sorry for my geeky reply ).. actually i dont have any i guess.. i just use when i need.. but i do have some choices..

for server based work : web server, mail, ftp, database, etc.. etc.. i like FreeBSD the most ( its a flavour of UNIX ... its not LINUX)

in Linux : i didnt like Redhat Until Fedora Project started.. i used Mandrake before.. but i think they have changed into something... new brand or so.. i dont follow mandrake anymore.. these days Fedora is a nice desktop OS ..

The best dektop experience i ever got was from MAC OS X, i used it for a month or so.. its tooooooooooooooo easy to work with.. and its secured... way secured than windows.. its built on freebsd.. it has almost everything.. everything that a person needs.. desktop graphics is nicer than windows.. looks fresh.. u can play with the OS.. its an OS for a newbie and for an advanced user aswell...

in windows the best release so far to me was Windows 2000, not catchy like Windows XP but was stable, fast, and moreover it was light... my highest uptime with windows 2000 was more than 5/6 weeks without a single restart.. i can hardly keep windows xp up to run more than a week.. the best thing about windows is, it has lots an programs and they r easy to install (in MAC.. u cant even imagine how easy it is).. and the interface is easier (MAC OS X beats it).. but other than that u cant call windows oss' as technologically advanced or superior OS.. its just alright to work with and as it is the most popular( noone will agree with me... but its just marketting )

MAC could have won the OS war but they r too snob to release the OS.. they think themselves as a Hardware company and they only release their OS with TPM (trusted platform module), so tht no one can use their OS unless its their hardware ( i used MAC OS X in my intel laptop before .. courtesy of OSX project.. someone cracked the OS's TPM) .. they have released MACtel ( MAC in intel platform ) so i hope the machines will be cheaper( for these countries.. nobody gives a shit what third worlds use.. cause 90% dont buy )

Now its been on the news these days.. a controversial rumor that google is upto something.. they may be planning to release an OS.. may be not in 1 or 2 yrs... but may be they will.. it will be based on Linux ( now dont be afraid .. windows lovers.. its Google's speciality to make things simpler.. they will create a very easy to use user interface.. the same way MAC used unix but hardly anyone notices, unless u want 2 know )

well i have heard a lot about windows xp problems.
but i wonder why. i faced simply none of them.
i have a dual booting pc with 98 and xp.
i dont know how many zilloin times 98 got hanged.
but xp never
Im a very cosmopolitan user.
Im a real hardcore gamer.
and also a crazy(!) novice programmer and web designer.
so i use from high end games like half life 2 to softs like 3dsmax, IIS 5.1 and ms sql server.
but i had no problems at all.

so its not right that xp is not reliable. atleast i belive that the peoples dont know how to use it well. thats why they have probs. If u know how to use it well. then i think anyone wud just love to use xp.

about mac os. Its not in the IBM class. and mac computer's are not recognised as "PC".
So out of the question.

I haven't used bsd. but used fedora. Not convincing at all.
I wud prefer windows 2003 server instead of using any linux or unix based system.
people say a lot about the lack of security and reliability. but i prefer good usability. and windows 2003 is far more "professional" then those linux or bsd system's.

lol... hehe.. well iqbal i actually wanted to say a lot of things.. the moment i saw u said mac's are not pc.. i lost my interest..

u have the right to defend ur views ..

mac uses a platform which is called PPC ( PowerPC) based on IBM powerpc processors.. search the net to get ur answer... and mac released new MAC's in intel x86 platform... and we were talking about OS's not platforms.. dont just comment on something based on ur assumptions pls..

Problems with XP i have is beyond ur capabilities ( its rude but its true ).. u have to have the knowledge to go that point.. i am not talking about simple hang or silly little random errors..

game doesnt have to do with stability .. it uses directx/opengl and based on ur AGP/PCI-Express cards

u said u use IIS and MS-SQL Server.. thats good.. have u ever used it in a production level? like using windows 2003 server with 40GB of data and a fully active service? constant users.. downloading from the site.. come to BanglaCafe, ask Lovelu (i am not mentioning my name because then it will be all me)..
have u ever used MS-SQL on a production database server? i have had the first hand experience to see how database of Vodafone Australia is maintained.. and MS-SQL does not fulfil the technological requirements.. it cant handle the db of that size.. they use Enterprize Linux by Redhat and Oracle..

the first time i saw Windows, i was facinated as well.. i used to use it as a server and be the "sh|t" among friends..

yes when u r using windows and those services at home.. and u want to show ur friends that u know something.. its good not when u come to the real world and deal with data, that is beyond ur reach ATM.. i think u have the potential to be a good user..

windows 2003 is nice or windows server/services is easy to setup.. just some gui.. but to tweak it .. make it more custom is a pain in the ass.. i changed the whole behaviour of apache/php, mysql, ssh, ftp.. to give certain benefits to BanglaForum.. changed their default characteristics.. i recompiled them.. in windows i can change the configuration files.. but i can never change the source and do it as i want..

u have mentioned urself as an "cosmopolitan" user.. however i have seen this word for the first time used to describe someone's pc knowledge but i can bet u r not.. if u r one u will go deep into the kernel and start to play with it..

i dont like to argue with kids so.. it will be my last post in this thread for now

i never used other OS than windows.
not even linux

i used windows 3.11,95,98,2000,me XP

but these days i have seen most mac pc with stunning display and design.
but i think ( jubi bhai correct me if i am wrong ) if u want mac OS then u need a mac based pc. which i dont have.

mac pc-s fascinates me me these days :P their design power and the OSs' displaying tools.

but im not sure ( as i never used it ) abt installing and maintaining other operations in mac.

and the drawback of buying a mac pc is that u don get wider range of FREE SOFTWARES for mac. whereas u get tons of softs compatiable with windows.

ill be making a list of some soft that i use very often and ill try to analyze it with mac

and about windows
well i myself faced many problems.
manyyy
so i cant simply call it PERFECT
well nothing or no one is perfect
are they?

ashique,

if u have never used Linux its not a big deal.. its not something to become a cool person.. but if u want to try it.. u can.. but its a bit different and needs a bit of knowledge.. (u can learn linux from the net, and takes about a month or so) i dont know whether u have ever used DOS as an operating system or not.. but linux depends mostly on command lines.. there are thousands of GUI programs in Linux, but u need to know the command lines. and Linux is not a big deal unless u wanna know it.

yes ashique u r right..if u want to use MAC u have to buy pc from Apple.. they use some restriction software/hardware combination(TPM) which stops user to use their OS in any other machine other than from Apple...

tell me which programs u use with windows and u need.. i will tell u the MAC versions.. if u r graphics designer.. mac has better softs than windows.. MAC is definately not good for games.. (not because they cant.. but because there arent much games that supports mac)..

u said u used Win3.11 .. may be u can recall the craze tht began when MS released Windows 95.. Mac is right now in tht situation.. but i dont know their business policy but they decided not to release their OS as a software.. i wish they release it.. then it will be fun to see a OS war.. and good for the environment.. like Firefox out performed IE and now MS is trying to update IE.

my request to everyone.. if u have never used anything.. or dont have minimum knowledge(it takes about 2/3 months of constant use).. dont just comment based on ur own ideas..

peace
