Lets start from the beginning.

What is Linux?

People Who dOnt know what Linux is sometimes ask me,if iTz a program daT rUns On Windows. When I tell dEm daT Linux Z itsElf aN opEratiNg System Like Windows 98 or Xp and daT dEy can rEmove (Or never Purchase) Windows,I suMtimes gEt a surprisEd rEactioN, "A PC caN ruN wiTh nothiNg frOm Windows oN it?" The Answer Z yes!

Linux is a free Operating System dat wZ crEatEd by Linus Torvalds when he wZ a studEnt at da University of Helsinki in 1991.Linus started Linux by writing a Kernel .Kernel is da heart of the operting system. He wrote the kernel partly from scratch and partly by using publicly available software.Linus then released the system to his friends and to a community of hackers on the Internet and asked them to work with it,fix it.and enhance it.It took off.

I make the distinction hEre between hackers (who juSt like to play with computers) and crackers (who break into computer systems and cause damage).

Today,dEre r thousands of software developers around da world contributing software to da open source community dat feeds the Linux initiative.Becoz da source code for da software is freely available, anyone can work on it,change it,or enhance it.Developers r encouraged to pass deir fixes and improvements back into da community,so dat Linux can continue to grow and improve.

Why A Penguin?

da following is a quote from Linus Torvalds:

Somebody had a logo competition announcement, maybe people can send their ideas to a web-site..

Anyway, this one looks like the poor penguin is not really strong enough to hold up the world, and it's going to get squashed. Not a good, positive logo, in that respect..

Now, when you think about penguins, first take a deep calming breath, and then think "cuddly". Take another breath, and think "cute". Go back to "cuddly" for a while (and go on breathing), then think "contented".

With me so far? Good..

Now, with penguins, (cuddly such), "contented" means it has either just gotten laid, or it's stuffed on herring. Take it from me, I'm an expert on penguins, those are really the only two options.

Now, working on that angle, we don't really want to be associated with a randy penguin (well, we do, but it's not politic, so we won't), so we should be looking at the "stuffed to its brim with herring" angle here.

So when you think "penguin", you should be imagining a slighly overweight penguin, sitting down after having gorged itself, and having just burped. It's sitting there with a beatific smile - the world is a good place to be when you have just eaten a few gallons of raw fish and you can feel another "burp" coming.

Not FAT, but you should be able to see that it's sitting down because it's really too stuffed to stand up. Think "bean bag" here.

Now, if you have problems associating yourself with something that gets off by eating raw fish, think "chocolate" or something, but you get the idea.

Ok, so we should be thinking of a lovable, cuddly, stuffed penguin sitting down after having gorged itself on herring. Still with me?

NOW comes the hard part. With this image firmly etched on your eyeballs, you then scetch a stylizied version of it. Not a lot of detail - just a black brush-type outline (you know the effect you get with a brush where the thickness of the line varies). THAT requires talent. Give people the outline, and they should say [ sickly sweet voice, babytalk almost ]"Ooh, what a cuddly penguin, I bet he is just _stuffed_ with herring", and small children will jump up and down and scream "mommy mommy, can I have one too?".

Then we can do a larger version with some more detail (maybe leaning against a globe of the world, but I don't think we really want to give any "macho penguin" image here about Atlas or anything). That more detailed version can spank billy-boy to tears for all I care, or play ice-hockey with the FreeBSD demon. But the simple, single penguin would be the logo, and the others would just be that cuddly penguin being used as an actor in some tableau.

Linus

da second quote is from when Linus announced Linux v2.0 on Usenet:

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.
-- Linus Torvalds

Primary Advantages Of Linux:

When compared to different commercially available operating systems,Linux's best assets are its price, its reliability, and the freedom it gives u.With Latest Linux kernel,u can also argue that scalability is one of its greatest assets.

Why Linux will always be better?

Yep that's right. Linux will always be better. Even the latest offering of windows vista still doesn't cut it against linux and the other *nix type operating systems. It (vista) is still a reaction and an attempt at catchup to the linux operating system. It is only due to corporate inertia and end user ignorance that it hasn't been relegated to the back benches that linux is sitting on now. This situation will not last long though.

The computing industry at the time of this blog writing is on a pivotal point. The lifespan of the last big upgrade cycle is just about over and companies and people are at the time when they are thinking about upgrading their machines and/or software. Before there was not much of a choice. It was microsoft or it was nothing. That was before linux came on to the radar.

Linux and other *nix systems were around during the last upgrade cycle too but the general public had not heard of it and the big irons paid no attention to it. That has all changed now. Today more and more of the general public has heard of, even if they haven't seen, the linux system. Corporations are starting to look at and think of linux as an alternative. Especially when confronted with a tens of thousands dollar price tag for a medium sized company. The big irons of the computing industry have taken up and thrown their weight behind the linux system and what they do others will follow.

That doesn't make linux the better operating system however. It does show that over the last few years people are starting to realise that it is for them the better operating system. Those reasons are varied and for the most part subjective to the individual persons or businesses needs.

The real reason that linux is better is not the money it will save, not the ease of use or the fancy eye candy. It is not the uses at which it can be put to, from embedded devices to clustered supercomputers. It is the pedigree and foundation on which it is built.

To use construction as an analogy the better the foundation the better the house. If you start with the foundation of a four bedroomed bungalow and try to expand that to a seven storied apartment you will be in a shaky situation. If you build that four bedroomed bungalow on the foundation of a fifteen storied apartment then you can expand with ease and confidence.

Linux has as its foundation the Unix(tm) operating system. This system was modeled off of the systems used since the dawn of computing. This foundation is based of multitasking, multiuser, secure and segregated building blocks. This foundation is easily scalable from a single use mobile phone to a multiuser, multi-machined supercluster. All from the same code base.

Windows has as its foundation the DOS(tm) operating system. The dos operating system was originally designed just for accessing disks. Hence the name Disk Operating System. It was a single user, single tasking system that gave no thought to security or segregation. Now the latest versions of windows have supposedly done away with dos however it is still an integral part and its methods of use are still deeply ingrained into the windows environment.

So no matter how windows tries to play catchup with the linux operating system it is inherently hobbled by the ingrained philosophy of the dos operating system and can never match the flexibility of the linux system. This is why linux has been, is and will always be the better operating system.
