Those annoying (but useful) pop ups!
AIM has gui notifications on the bottom right corner of the screen letting users know when a buddy signs on, off, goes away and comes back. There's a plugin for gaim to mimic that and more. It's called Guifications.
Not only can you set it up to notify you with pop ups like with aim, but it even tells you when someone IMs you. This is helpful when your working on many virtual desktops and often forget or have your IM window in one particular desktop but forget to check it after a while (provided that sound is off so you have no way of knowing theres a IM).
The plugin is included in most distros. So check in the plugins section in preferences (in gaim) and just enable it.
If you don't have it installed already, grab it from either http://guifications.sf.net/ or if you're a debian user just

apt-get install guifications | ||||
