Unhappy 2nd Report of IPCC, Posted April 6th, 2007, 05:41 PM #1 (permalink) |
Climate change 'threat to Asia'

Up to a billion people in Asia could be adversely affected by global climate change, a United Nations report is expected to conclude. Some of the warnings likely to be included in the report are acute water shortages, hunger and the continent's rivers running low.
It is the second in a series of reports by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
It says India is likely to be among the first major nations to be affected.
The panel says the world's poorest countries are likely to feel some of the worst effects of global warming.

'Meltdown'
One of the major world rivers on the endangered list is India's Ganges.
It is one of the great rivers of the Indian-subcontinent, the source of life for hundreds of millions of people.
Many revere the Ganges as a goddess.
In the holy city of Varanasi, temples line the banks of the river.
For several kilometres, steps descend to the water's edge and as the giant river flows gently past, thousands of people bathe in its holy waters every day.
Most of the water flows from glaciers high in the Himalayan mountains.
Only the polar ice sheets hold more fresh water.
But global warming means many of those glaciers are melting fast and could vanish in the coming decades.
The result would be catastrophic.
The worst predictions say water flow in the Ganges could drop by two-thirds.
They say 400 million people could struggle to find drinking water.
Farmers would not be able to irrigate their land.
Hydro-electric power stations would generate less electricity.
India's much-vaunted economic growth could be affected and India could be one of the big losers from climate change.

Though the report mainly focused on India, but we all knw it well that the fate of Bangladesh is closely related with India as we share the same rivers and same kinda climate..so the threat is obviously also on us

USA and china are the main criminals who should be careful.

usa releases 25% and china 20% of the total carbon emissions yearly

Ice at North Pole could be gone by 2040, scientists warn
Dire news on global warming as Geophysical Union meets in S.F.

David Perlman, Chronicle Science Editor
Tuesday, December 12, 2006

Sea ice that for centuries has covered much of the High Arctic has been shrinking at a record pace due to global warming, and as winter began last month in the oceans surrounding the North Pole, larger stretches of open water remained free of ice than ever before, climate scientists reported Monday. The extent of Arctic sea ice is a key signal of the world's warming rate, and its effects are widespread: Immensely valuable fisheries shift from the coasts of one continent to another, algae and plankton disappear in some areas and increase in others, Arctic wildlife becomes endangered, and torrents of fresh water from melting ice alter the salinity of seas far to the south.

Where only a few months ago experts were predicting that if the present rate of warming continues unchecked there could be no sea ice left in the Arctic by the end of this century, the latest climate calculations indicate the seas there could well be totally ice-free by 2040, the specialists warned.

The latest assessment of global warming and its effects came at the opening of the American Geophysical Union's annual meeting in San Francisco, where more than 15,000 scientists are gathering at Moscone Center this week to present new data from their research in topics as varied as earthquakes, weather, oceanography and space research. The impact of global warming is felt not only at the Earth's surface, one team of scientists reported: Increased emissions of greenhouse gases from industry -- primarily carbon dioxide -- that raise temperatures at the surface will actually lower them in the outermost reaches of the atmosphere, around 200 to 300 miles above the Earth's surface where most satellites and the International Space Station fly. That region, which scientists term the "thermosphere," actually extends from 60 to 400 miles above Earth.

As a result, in another 10 years the thin air up there will become 3 percent less dense and will reduce drag on every object that orbits in space, according to Stanley Solomon of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

That means those objects, whether manned or unmanned, will remain in space longer, require less fuel to launch them, and potentially save millions of dollars, Solomon said. But the upper atmosphere is also crowded with "space junk" -- thousands of bits of debris from broken-up launch vehicles, decayed satellites, and nuts and bolts from orbiting spacecraft that have fallen apart, NASA has warned. This stuff is increasing year by year and all of it is also bound to stay in space longer before the objects' orbits decay -- posing an increasing hazard for future satellites and manned space voyages, Solomon said. As for polar ice, last winter the extent of Arctic sea ice cover was smaller than average and was followed by a faster rate of melting during the summer. Now that winter is here again, the extent of returning ice is smaller than ever before, according to a team of scientists from the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado and the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. With Arctic air temperatures increasing more rapidly than ever before, sea ice diminishing, permafrost thawing, and trees and shrubs increasing across the tundra, a "tipping point" when the changes become irreversible may well be at hand, said Larry Hinzman of the University of Alaska.

The "tipping point" is manifest in the rapid decrease of the Arctic's sea ice cover, according to Mark Serreze of the Snow and Ice Data Center. Satellites in 2005 measured the smallest extent of sea ice ever recorded, he said, and after the summer melt period, the ice returned at the slowest rate ever.

This year is even more alarming, Serreze said. Although the extent of sea ice was not as limited as it was in 2005, he said, by the end of last November, satellite measurements showed that the ice had failed to extend as widely as the previous year and was more than 772 square miles shy of its average extent, he said.

In 20 years, Serreze said, the extent of Arctic sea ice will be reduced by 80 percent. "And that could be another tipping point. It is no longer recovering as it should, and if it reaches a critical level, it may never recover at all."

As the ice continues to retreat in response to increasing temperatures caused by increases in greenhouse gases, more open ocean is exposed, and the sun warms that open water more rapidly, said Marika Holland, an oceanographer at National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder.

"Our calculations show t
