World’s most expensive mobile number is 666 6666. Yeah, thats right.
The number, 666 6666, sold for 10m Qatari riyals or £1.5m. (1.5 Million)
The previous record holder was Chinese number 8888 8888, which sold for £270,000. The Cantonese word for eight sounds very similar to the word for rich. It was bought by Sichuan Airlines.
The auction started at a million riyals and interest quickly narrowed from eight bidders to just two, according to Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA).
The auction was organised by national telco Qtel, which has run two previous auctions and plans to run another in September.
According to KUNA, The auction started off with a million riyals with higher bids set at 100, 000 riyal increments.
Waleed al-Sayyed, executive officer of the Qatar Telecommunications Company (Q-TEL) which sponsored the auction told reporters that the 10 million riyals will be turned over to Hamad Medical Services Foundation to fund building medical clinics in faraway regions of the country where medical services are not easily available.
The eight bidders had to pay 3000 riyals each in order to take part in the bidding. The total amount collected from that (i.e.24,000 riyals) was turned over to local charities.
Q-TEL had sponsored two such auctions last April and plans to do it again next September. All revenues from these auctions will be donated to charities and social service organizations, said al-Sayyed. (end) ma.
