Microsoft have launched their "live" initiative today.

Formed from the start.com technologies, Windows Live will include many of Microsoft's beta web technologies - Windows Live Mail (new Hotmail UI), Windows Live Saftey Center, Windows Live Favorites, Windows Live Messenger, and Windows OneCare Live. Live.com serves as the personalized starting point for Windows Live services, powered by technologies such as RSS and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX).

The company today also previewed Office Live, a new set of Internet-based services for growing and managing a business online. The initial Office Live offerings are targeted at the approximately 28 million small businesses worldwide that have fewer than 10 employees. These services can be used independently but also integrate with Microsoft Office programs used regularly by more than 400 million people around the world, including Microsoft Outlook®, Microsoft Excel®, Microsoft Office Live Meeting and Microsoft Office Small Business Edition. Over time, the scope of Office Live services will expand.

Office Live is due to beta at the beginning of 2006

Default Windows Live Safety Center, Posted November 2nd, 2005, 09:12 PM #2 (permalink) |
Following on from the Windows Live One Care beta and Windows Live announcements today Microsoft has also released Windows Live Security Center into beta.

The Security Center is an online web application that performs a scan of a users system to ensure there are no viruses on the machine, wasted disk space is removed, maintenance is performed and common open ports on firewalls are checked.

The scan is activated by an Active-X control and is all initiated online. The scan performs the following actions:

Virus Scan
Disk Cleanup Scan
Disk fragmentation Scan
Open Ports Scan

The Safety Center looks as though it's still in testing at the moment but it's available for you to try.

Default Windows Live Messenger Screenshots, Posted November 2nd, 2005, 09:33 PM #3 (permalink) |
After the announcements yesterday about Microsoft's new "live" services the company held a press conference detailing all the products in the Microsoft Live platform.

The company demo'd what is set to be Windows Live Messenger (the next generation of MSN Messenger). Similar to what we exclusively revealed months ago (Wave 11), the screenshots show a simplified interface and a fresh coloured feel. The next generation Messenger is expected to beta within the month and Microsoft's MSN team is aggresively seeking new testers for the upcoming client.

Windows Live Messenger is expected to intergrate better PIM functionality, Skype like calling features, Windows Live Local intergration and better support for MSN Spaces.

After the announcements yesterday about Microsoft's new "live" services the company held a press conference detailing all the products in the Microsoft Live platform.

The company demoed an early version of Office Live, a managed web application for organising calendar, mail and contacts. Office Live will combine Web Hosting, Collaboration of Projects, Business Applications and Communications. Many expect a fully hosted version of Microsoft Office but this is not the company's intension for Office Live.

Microsoft demoed a payroll application using Office Live that could be used by small businesses to manage their payroll systems over a rich web interface.

Microsoft is expected to release Office Live to beta in the firsts quarter of 2006.
