Full name Manchester United Football Club
Nickname The Red Devils
Founded 1878, as Newton Heath LYR F.C.
Ground Old Trafford, Manchester
Capacity76,000
Chairman David Gill (Chief Executive)
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson
League FA Premier League

Manchester United F.C. is an English football club, and is based at Old Trafford Football Ground, Stretford, Manchester. Utd have won the FA Premier League/Football League 15 times, FA Cup 11 times, the League Cup twice, the European Cup twice, the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once, the Intercontinental Cup once and the European Super Cup once. The club has had the highest average attendance in English football for the past 34 seasons, with the exception of 1987-1989 during redevelopment at Old Trafford.
The club was formed as Newton Heath (L&YR) F.C. in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. After nearing bankruptcy in 1902, the club was taken over by J.H. Davies who changed its name to Manchester United. The Old Trafford Football Ground was bombed during the Second World War, leading the club to seek charity from their then-illustrious neighbours Manchester City, who allowed them to play their games at Maine Road for a period. United appointed Sir Matt Busby as manager after the Second World War, and his then-unheard-of policy of producing most of the players through the club's youth team brought great success, with the club winning the Football League in 1956 and 1957. This success was halted by the Munich air disaster of 1958, in which eight of the club's players died. It was thought that the club might fold, but instead went on to win the football league in 1965 and 1967, and the European Cup in 1968.
The club did not see success again until the 1990s and early 2000s when Alex Ferguson guided it to eight league championships in eleven years, most recently in the 2002-3 season. In 1999, Manchester United became the only team to win the UEFA Champions League, FA Premier League and the FA Cup in the same season. The club had been run as a Public Limited Company since 1991, and an attempted takeover by Rupert Murdoch had been blocked by the British Government in 1999, but in 2005 Malcolm Glazer completed a hostile takeover of the club which plunged the club into massive debt as his bid was based on borrowing most of the money.

News : 19th July

Yesterday {18th July} it was believed that Ruud van Nistelrooy was heading out of Old Trafford to the Santiago Bernabeu, yet Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected Real Madrids offer for the Dutch striker.

Reports in Spain yesterday suggested that a fee had been agreed and that Ruud was to undergo a medical today. Real Madrid had even published a player profile of Ruud on their website, this was quickly taken off though.

It seems only a matter of time before van Nistelrooy joins Real Madrid. In order for this to happen Real Madrid need to raise their offer from £10 million closer to Uniteds valuation of £15 million.

Ferguson stated: “There is no agreement between Manchester United and Real Madrid over Ruud. We have refused their offer. He remains a Mancheter United player.

Capello is a well known admirer of the Dutch marksman and Real are expected to submit a new offer for the player later today.

Midfield is Sir Alex's priority

Sir Alex Ferguson admits his main transfer priority is still replacing Roy Keane in the United midfield.

The possible departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy has prompted rumour-mongers to cast their eye over potential reinforcements upfront. The Gaffer, however, is adamant that he only plans to renovate his side's engine room.

Sir Alex told the News of the World: "The main issue for me is the composition of the midfield. We are not looking outside of that.

"When you lose a player like Roy Keane, which was always going to happen as he was getting older, you have to find a replacement for him."

With a distinct shortage of ready-made alternatives in the game, let alone available for transfer, Sir Alex has endured long-term frustration in trying to replace his former captain.

He has been forced to experiment with various members of his squad in midfield, including the unlikely but effective pairing of John O'Shea and Ryan Giggs, and now has options if he fails to recruit any new blood.

"It is something I have been looking at for a long time," he conceded. "We have Paul Scholes back to his best form. We also have the quality and experience of Ryan Giggs so it can't be that bad.

"We have youthfulness in John O'Shea — who did a great job for us last year in that position — and Darren Fletcher, so we have some alternatives in there."

Ferguson insists, however, that United are working hard to bring in new faces.

"Fans want to see new signings and a new face which makes a difference to our play and bring more success," he admitted.

"We are trying to sign a couple of players who would add variety to our play. They are different types of players to the ones we have and that would only strengthen us.

"But, at the end of the day, we will not be stupid. I am quite adamant about that."

United had a concrete bid for Tottenham's Michael Carrick rejected in June, and Sir Alex is insistent that he will not be increasing his offer to match Spurs' valuation of the player.

He said: "World Cup year is always difficult but we tried to do some fundamental business bef
