| OSLO, Norway (AP) -- Bangladeshi Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for their work in advancing economic and social opportunities. The economist and his bank, who will share the prize, were cited for their efforts to help "create economic and social development from below" in their home country by using innovative economic programs such as microcredit lending. "Every single individual on earth has both the potential and the right to live a decent life. Across cultures and civilizations, Yunus and Grameen Bank have shown that even the poorest of the poor can work to bring about their own development," the Nobel Committee said in its citation. Yunus has drawn praise for advancing microcredit which has been credited with helping poor women to advance their lives and pull them out of poverty. "Economic growth and political democracy can not achieve their full potential unless the female half of humanity participates on an equal footing with the male," the committee said. Grameen Bank, which was founded by Yunus, provides credit to "the poorest of the poor" in rural Bangladesh, without any collateral, according to its Web site. "At GB, credit is a cost effective weapon to fight poverty and it serves as a catalyst in the overall development of socio-economic conditions of the poor who have been kept outside the banking orbit on the ground that they are poor and hence not bankable," the committee said. than read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_peace_prize According to Nobel's Living will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". The Peace Prize is awarded annually in Oslo, the capital of Norway, unlike the prizes in economics, physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and literature, which are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences The Norwegian Parliament appoints the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which selects the Laureate for the Peace Prize. The Committee chairman, currently Dr. Ole Danbolt Mjøs, awards the Prize itself. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The person to say that is not that dumb actually, as you read the reason for giving uncle Yunus the prize has nothing to do with peace, I quote Nobleprize site "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below".And by the link you gave, there is a chart of the winners.. and when you read the reason they gave for uncle, it doesn't belong there. People there actually some how fought for peace.. the actual word "PEACE". Uncles major has been economics throughout, he came up with an economic structure that helps people. His field has never been social relations or any humane subject. It is his heart that is humane and helped others... He should have been awarded on his subject, as he used that to help others. It been more honour for him to get in economics. Though there is no less to get peace prize either, but it's not his field. Besides a person is not dumb to share their opinion, anyway I think I have the right to call my own country men stupid... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
