heres the link to an auto gear stick ( not that u havnt seen one before :P
http://www.santroxing.com/images/auto.gif

auto te, u can press the button to change from economy to power/sports mode, which gives you extra 'grunt' or higher revs. but.. u cant control the revs beyond that unless u press ur foot right down on the accelerator/gas. (that takes a lil extra time to kick in)

manual car has the advantage of shiftin a gear down to get the higher rev. To get the same effect on auto-cars , bring the gearstick down from D to 2. This gives you higher revs and faster acceleration when u want to overtake.
its exactly what happns in triptronics type gear, the reaction time is still slightly longer than on manual.
hope this is clear, otherwise feel free to explain further.
Also other readers....let me know how it went, after you try.

Hmmm, I guess not all cars have that "button" to change from economy to power/sports. Or maybe I haven't noticed that button in the usual locations yet. But anyways, mine is a AutoStick. It has both Auto transmission, and below "D" I have 4 manual gears for Manual transmission. To switch gears manually, I have to 'tap' right for higher gears, and 'tap' left for lower gears.

I don't have much experience with Manual Transmission, so can you tell me at what RPM or speed [mph] I should shift the gears... Like for example... say at 40/50mph shift to gear 2 and so on....Thanks!

Severus, do u mean 3 thousand rpm? i mite b wrong.
you can also tweak the strain on the wire thats connects ur accelerator to the fuel injection system to run ur car at higher or lower ratio. I usd to drive long distance, hence had it on higher stress on that wire. So.. around city area i had to use straight 2nd gear to start the car frm stop. (then again - i drove a 15yrs old manual japanese car, had the independence to play around with its guts).
i cudnt afford a cruise control. rasta thika ekta boro eet tuilla niya boshaitaam accelerator paddle e, ar haat pa gutaya biri dhoraitaam

Xan vaijaan, haha, i guess the next question is - what car do u drive? if its somethin i can afford, i mite b able to tell u wher the magic button is. but i doubt thats the case.

dear readers,
has any of u driven on snow? or snowy condition? using chains?

anothr stream of thoughts to think abt is- front wheel drive vs rear wheel drives. both hav their +-

Fanush bhai,

It's a Dodge Stratus ES 2000. Still no magic button but I figured mine out! Thanks for info. As for snow or snowy conditions... LOL yes I have. My tires are for all weather and I've relied on them heavily. I've also seen "spike/studded" tires as well as "chain" tires.
And if given the choice, I'll go for 4WD rather than front/rear..

XaN so urs has a triptonic gear .. its not that bad.. better than Auto.. r about gear shifting.. i wont say anything.. depends on the car ( how big ur engine, turbocharged or supercharged, how many pounds have u got, even how big is ur turbo.. ) when racing its always a good idea to shift ur gear after ur opponent iff ur opponent has a bigger engine..

when street racing i saw my friends that they change their first gear untill it reaches 60/70kmh.. then they change.. then again they have got cars that can accelerate 0-60mph ( 0-100 kmh) / 6 sec.

and from my experience.. i try to feel the engine.. jokhon bujhi change korte hobe i do.. i just feel it.. konodin kheyal kore dekhi nai koto rpm or speed...

fanush vai correct me if i am wrong.. manual e ekta advantage ache.. about gear shifting.. if u want a sudden acceleration.. u shift the gear to a lower one ( if u r on 4.. go to 3) and then change the shift back to 4 again.. gives a boost.. triptonic e eita hoy naki jani na.. but manual e hoy eita jani..

the button fanush vai is talking about is called "overdrive" gear er ase pasei thakar kotha..

after a long time i think this thread needs attention!!

i still face difficulties with the manual gear cars
its not that i cant actually take it. but i actually like the manual geared cars after im over with the 1st gear. but in BD, specially in town and in traffic jams, u hardly get the chance to pull ur gear to the 3rd.

and in auto gears the great satisfaction is that i dont have the fear that i will turn off the engine in a traffic jam.

and here, as i dont have a license yet i hardly get chance to drive :P

and fanush bhai i am CURIOUS to know about hotwiring

and about experience i have a bitter one
long ago i locked my car with the key inside it :P though we were in the city and it was possible to get to home in taxi and bring the extra key, but a drive came up and opened the lock precisely with a thin metal rod. it was a cycle's spoke. i was very young that time and i tried to learn it from that driver, but he didnt teach me that .
