Launch Disaster: The Tragedy Within

The recent launch disaster in our country is the launch MV Raipura which sank near the Aricha took more than 150 lives. For the families of the victims the sorrow knew no bounds. Many families have lost their near and loved ones. As Bangladesh is a land of natural calamities but it is not sufficient enough to prevent these tragedies from happening and the poor and needy people fall victim to it. Like many Dipu is a victim to this great tragedy which took his parents life. Although his parents may never come back but since there was no body found he comes to the scene of the accident everyday. The government can’t even retrieve the bodies of the dead. There may be more than what actual numbers of victims we know.
Dipu is a student of class eight in a high school near Aricha. His native village is just at the opposite side of the river. His parents used to work hard so that Dipu can go to school. Dipu’s parents used to visit their native village quite often. So after coming back from school Dipu used to wait for his parents to return home. But on May 17th 2005 little had Dipu expected that his parents would never come home again. He heard that a launch had sunk near Aricha and he knew his parents were on it. He ran to the scene to find his parents and saw many people just like him looking for their loved ones. He desperately asked people all around him but the place was too much crowded with crying people with the sadness in their hearts for the loss of their loved ones. Dipu came back home hoping to find his parents the next day but for the next days he could not find them. Every one in his family had told him that they are dead but to Dipu if they are dead then why can’t he see their body. This probably had been inside the launch when it sank and still is there.
The rescue vessel MV Rustam came to the scene of the accident in the evening and started working from the next day to rescue the vessel which sunk forty feet below the water. The water current was so strong that even the divers from Bangladesh inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) could not retrieve bodies from the sunken launch. So the numbers of dead bodies were severely limited. Rustam’s operations were delayed because of strong currents and the metal wires used for re floating the sunken launch snapped and new ones had to be ordered. Bodies were floating and few bodies in the numbers like 30 were retrieved. The relatives of the victims had hoped that their loved ones bodies would be retrieved but to their strong disbelief on May 22nd the rescue mission was cancelled.
Like many before MV Raipura’s fate had been the same because it could not be rescued and she sank deep with many victims onboard. Dipu returns everyday to find his parents in the same place of the accident but he knows he may never see his parents again. Our government can’t stop disasters from happening but at least we should have the technology and the methods to retrieve the sunken vessels and ease the pain of the dead victims by giving them their bodies. Or else we may see many people like Dipu in places with false hopes.

Teletalk Craze
- Md.Wahiduzzaman

Recently Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) have opened a new dimension of telecommunications in the country. The much talked about BTTB cell phone, Teletalk, have been launched. Teletalk is the first cell phone company owned by the state. Though there are four other private cell phone companies, Teletalk have come up with the promise to provide good services and also be very competitive.

When Teletalk first announced launching of their programme, people promptly welcomed it. People started preparing with much enthusiasm to get Teletalk connection.

On the first day of launching the programme, 1900 forms were distributed from 11 outlets in the capital. But the demand for Teletalk connection was huge. When the forms were out for distribution, thousands of people queued at the outlets. The people waited for long, braved the scorching heat, rain and even a nationwide strike on the day.

The forms were too meagre in comparison with the number of aspirant connection seekers. At one point the forms ran out. But still people kept waiting, with the hope of getting a form. They started growing impatient. At a stage the authorities tried to control the people with the help of cops. Finally the cops clubbed and baton-charged the public, which resulted in the outburst of the long-waiting people who vented out their anger. There was a clash between the cops and the aspirant applicants. Distribution of forms was stopped. The authorities, however, announced that they would call for applications online.

Recently, Teletalk authority called for applications online. Again a huge number of people responded. Few days back a lottery was drawn to strike lucky 50,000 persons, as against as many as 435,000 applicants. Teletalk advised the lucky winners to collect their SIM cards from banks upon announcement.

Necessity of cell phone is unquestionable. Cell phone can keep us connected with each other, always. Little is required to talk about cell phone’s importance.

The question is how much better services can Teletalk provide, and how much competitive can it be, with other cell phone companies. Because, people are concerned about the services they get and charges pay for. It is a point that the present operating companies are coming up with lower call tariffs, greater free talk time, greater pulse, lower SMS rates, etc. Now, whether Teletalk can compete them in the race.

Teletalk is a wonderful project initiated. Though it should have been launched earlier. But it’s better late than never. It is expected that Teletalk will become very popular, due to many practical reasons. It has strong and high-tech network coverage nationwide, covering all the upazillas of the country with automated exchanges. Thus Teletalk will enjoy accessibility even at the remotest corners of the country. Since the network is already there, high budget fresh investment will not be required. Therefore, call tariffs are expected to be reasonably low.

Teletalk is state-owned. It’s people’s property. You, everybody and I own it. So let us uphold it and pray that Teletalk lives long. Long live Teletalk.

Science Fair
Our mind fills with joy with sounding of the word ‘Fair’. And with it we feel as if we are in the Baishakhi Fair or Ekushey Fair or Trade Fair and so on.

But this ‘Fair’ of ours is not like the Ekushey, Baishakhi or Trade Fair. This is our Science Fair. This is our school’s Science Fair.

Just a few months back we had our school’s science fair. Oh! What a vast arrangement it was, spreading all over the school. What an enchanting and cheerful business of many ‘great’ scientists like us all. As though all of us have invented so many great things.

We all were grouped in threesome or fours. Each group had separate project. Some about hygiene, some about food. Some about birds and some about animals. Some about the solar system, so some about agriculture and so on.

However, on the science fair day the school filled up with all the teachers and the students. More interesting and inspiring was the visit of all the students’ parents and relatives. We felt ourselves so great by their visit. It was simply great and exciting.

We decorated the entire school in a colourful mood with balloons, festoons, coloured papers, paintings, lace-ribbons, etc. more colourful were the students, all in very attractive and nice dresses. The visitors were also all in nice dresses. All these together gave the science fair a very festive mood.

It was also exciting that some photojournalists visited our fair. They took snaps of our fair. Those were published in some of the daily newspapers.

The fair opened in the afternoon. By evening it was over. We returned our houses with the great hope of becoming a famed scientist of one day. So that we can be our parents’ pride, our school’s and our country’s pride. We can do well being of our people. We seek such inspirations and blessings from our teachers and parents and all our well-wishers.

Qualities of a Good Teacher
A school earns name and fame by the academic results of its students. Students are cared, guided and taught by the teachers of the school. It is the teachers who are behind the fact of the students’ good result. It is, therefore, the innermost fact that the teachers should have and possess good qualities for their students’ good result. Now, the question is what are the qualities of a good teacher.

Morning shows the day. It is like the saying that to be a good teacher to be liked and loved by the students, a teacher should be smart, jolly, respectable and loveable. A naughty student often becomes easier to managed and taught if he likes his teacher at the first meet.

Teachers are the guardians of the students in the school. Teachers with affectionate, considerate and sympathetic qualities are good teachers. Students quite often made mistakes in their lessons. With fear of scolding they repeat mistakes. But if they are made understood in a very affectionate manner, they get them

Many man many minds. One of the most important qualities to be a good teacher is having patience. In a class there are different types of students. Some are naughty some are quiet, some are intelligent some are dull, some are studious some are aversive. Though hard but managing all in a patient manner is another important quality of a good teacher.

Class controlling capacity is another important quality of a good teacher. Not always that to be affectionate and patient a teacher can control the class, sometime students need to be punished for their wrong doings. Afterwards they can be made understood. This would develop among the students a sense of fear, love and, above all, respect for the teachers.

A good teacher cannot be made out of one unless he possesses complete knowledge about the subject he teaches. So, this is yet another important quality of a good teacher. Whatever we do, we cannot be ever successful with shallow knowledge in any sphere of work.

The hallmark quality to be a good teacher is the capability and ability of teaching. It is the technique, skill, pattern and the art of teaching. Any teacher having these qualities would be a good teacher. A teacher with understanding academic result many not be a good teacher without having these qualities while a teacher of average result with the above qualities can made a good and successful teacher out of him.

To be a good teacher one should be punctual and sincere to his efforts. Because, to make good pupils, a teacher has to be an ideal of them.

Teaching is a technically hard profession. And the more, a good teacher is the combination of the qualities of smart, intelligent, jolly, affectionate, considerate, sympathetic, patient, class controlling capacity, depth of knowledge, teaching capability, etc. but devotion and commitment to the profession can make a good teacher, in addition to the above qualities.

The success of any school is the success of its students. The success of the students is the success of their teachers. Teachers are man-making machines. We are proud enough to have such machines of high quality in our school.
