The History of Elves Elves are the Firstborn. They are immortal, wise, and fair. They are not prissy-boys.Elves awakened on the shores of the inland sea, Cuiviénen (Waters of Awakening). It was located in Helcar, during the Years of the Trees. The elves were called to Valinor after Orome (a Vala) discovered them singing. He named them the Eldar, the People of the Stars. However, they already called themselves the Quendi, Those Who Speak with Voices. Elves are alike to Men. They are both Children of Illuvatar. Although there are similarities, there are also great differences. The elves are ‘immortal’, at least so long as the world lasts. They are not susceptible to aging or disease, and they can only die by being slain in battle, or by withering away from grief. When an elf does die, he is reborn in the Halls of Mandos, in Valinor. Elves, unlike Men, are not bound to Middle-earth. They are permitted to sail to Valinor, which was removed from the world. Elves have clearer sight and perception, too, but those gifts have their limits. The History of Ents Ents are a very old race that appeared in Middle-earth when the Elves did. They were apparently created by Eru Ilśvatar at the behest of Yavanna after she learned of Aulė's children, the Dwarves, knowing that they would be wont to fell trees. Ents were envisioned as Shepherds of the Trees, to protect the forests from Orcs, Dwarves and other perils. Although the Ents were sentient beings at the time of their awakening, they did not know how to speak until the Elves taught them. Ents are tree-like creatures, having become like the trees that they shepherd. They vary in traits, from everything to height and size, colouring, and the number of fingers and toes. An individual Ent more or less resembles the specific species of tree that they typically guard. There used to be Entwives (literally "Ent-women"), but they started to move farther away from the Ents because they liked to plant and control things, so they moved away to the region that would later become the Brown Lands across the Great River Anduin. The History of Men The race of Men first awakened in the eastern land of Hildorien at the beginning of the First Age. They awoke when the Sun first rose, and when the Noldor returned to Middle-earth from Aman. Men are unique for their ‘Gift of Men’, which is also known as Death. After a man’s set time on the world, he leaves the world, and goes beyond it. Men suffer from famine, disease, and old age, unlike the elves. The elves called them the Engwar, the Sickly, referring to their susceptibility to the above. The History of Dwarves In a great hall under the mountains of Middle-earth, Aulė, the smith of the Valar, fashioned the Seven Fathers of Dwarves during the Ages of Darkness, when Melkor and his evil servants in Utumno and Angband held sway over all of Middle-earth. Therefore Aulė made Dwarves stout and strong, unaffected by cold and fire, and sturdier than the races that followed. Aulė knew of the great evil of Melkor, so he made the Dwarves stubborn, indomitable, and persistent in labor and hardship. They were brave in battles and their pride and will could not be broken. The Dwarves were deep-delving miners, masons, metalworkers and the most wondrous stone-carvers. They were well-suited for the crafts of Aulė, who had shaped the mountains, for they were made strong, long-bearded and tough, but not tall, being four to five feet in height. As their toil was long, they were each granted a life about two and a half centuries, for they were mortal; they could also be slain in battle. Aulė made the Dwarves wise with the knowledge of his crafts and gave them a language of their own called Khuzdul. The History of Hobbits Hobbits are between two to four feet tall, the average height being three feet six inches. They tend towards stoutness and have slightly pointed ears. Their feet are furry, with leathery soles; most Hobbits never wear shoes. They are fond of an unadventurous bucolic life of farming, eating, and socializing. Living rather longer than humans, Hobbits can sometimes live for up to 130 years (with 100 years average). The time at which a young Hobbit "comes of age" is 33, as compared to the human 21 years. Thus a seventy year old Hobbit would only be middle-aged. Hobbits also like to drink ale in inns. Hobbits enjoy at least seven meals a day when they can get them. Mealtimes mentioned by Tolkien include breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, lunch, tea, dinner, and supper. Historically, the Hobbits are known to have originated in the Valley of Anduin, between Mirkwood and the Misty Mountains. They have lost the genealogical details of how they are related to the rest of humankind. At this time, there were three Hobbit-kinds, with different temperaments. The Harfoots, the most numerous, were almost identical to the Hobbits as they are described in The Hobbit. The History of Nazguls In the twenty-third century of the Second Age of Sun in Middle-earth there arose nine mighty wraiths who in the Black Speech of Orcs were named the Nazgūl, which is "Ringwraiths". And of all the evil servants and generals of Sauron the Ring Lord these Nazgūl proved to be the greatest. It is said that the Nazgūl were once powerful kings and sorcerers among Men and they were each given a Ring of Power by Sauron. These Rings were nine of the magical nineteen Rings that Celebrimbor and the Elven-smiths of Eregion forged for Sauron. For many years these Men used their Rings to fulfil their own desires, yet all were ruled by the One Ring that Sauron made. Though these chosen Men lived by the power of the Rings far beyond the span of ordinary mortals, their forms faded. By the twenty-third century they were wraiths entirely, and thralls that thought only of how they might serve Sauron the Ring Lord. They wore great cloaks, black and hooded, and hauberks of mail and silver helms, yet beneath were the grey robes of the dead and their bodies were invisible. Any who looked on their faces fell back in horror, for nothing seemed to bear up helm and hood. Yet sometimes there appeared, where faces should be, the glow of two luminous and hypnotic eyes or, in rage and power, a red and hellish flame. The weapons of the Nazgūl were numorous: they carried swords of steel and of flame, black maces and daggers with magical poisoned blades. They used spells of beckoning and spells of blasting sorcerous fire, and the curse of their Black Breath was like a plague of despair, and the curse of its terror froze the heart of their foes. The Nazgūl were untouchable to mortal Men, for arms could not unless blessed by Elvish spell and any blade that struck them withered and perished. The History of Orcs Orcs are described as ugly and filthy humanoids. Their height varies from human-sized to shorter. Many have long arms, like monkeys. Along with that, many of them have crooked backs and legs. "The Best part of Having a Cancer is you can smoke as much as you want" - A Cancer Paitent | |||||||||||||||||||
